Change

In the current political campaign for President of the United States much is being said about change. Over the last year, candidates from both parties have spoken about how they, as the next president, will change the way things are done. Of course, it is a "given" that things will likely change since the next president will be new. However, Rudi Giuliani made the point about change that it can "either be change for the good or change for the worse." Policies will dictate the kind of change that happens.

Solomon said, "My son, fear the Lord and the king, and do not join with those given to change." (Proverbs 24:21.) The wise man is not talking about changing the color of the walls, rearranging furniture, or getting a new car. By change he means those who would rise up in rebellion-taking up arms against rulers. They are the lawless type. Such will bring swift destruction upon themselves (Provers 24:22.)

Christians have the responsibility to be subject to civil government. "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God" (Romans 13:1.) Peter reminds us to "Be subject to every ordinance of man" and to "Honor the king" (I Peter 2:13, 17.) Paul teaches us to "pray for kings... that we may live a peaceful and quiet life" (I Timothy 2:1-2.) God's people are not the sort that take up arms in rebellion against the government nor do they parade around with signs of protest against such.

We will effect more change by simply "fearing the Lord" and teaching His word. Slavery in the Roman empire was not brought down by "protest marches" but by Christian principles taking hold. Hopefully, our next president will govern by God's laws and that's the kind of change we need for the good. We can only hope...and pray...obey God!
